20 Ways to Save on Back To School Clothing & Supplies

We're reaching the end of summer! If you have kids and haven't already started, it's time to start back to school shopping! So to help you save a little money in the process, I've put together a list of all the ways you can save on clothes and school supplies.



1. Make a list! Before you even head to the store or open your browser, make a list of everything your child(ren) will need clothing wise to start the school year. Having a list helps keep you on track to avoid over spending on items that aren't needed.

2. Make a budget! Create a budget and stick to it! This will help you save money and avoid over spending.

3. Shop during your states tax free weekend! If you're one of the lucky states, you'll have an the opportunity to to shop for certain items without having to pay sales tax! Below is a list (guide) of all the dates and savings available!

Be sure to double check your states government tax or revenue site for guidelines. Here are the links to the states pages I could find with information: Arkansas Connecticut Florida Iowa Maryland Missouri New Mexico Ohio Oklahoma South Carolina Texas Wisconsin Virginia.

4. Online! Check your favorite stores website for any online-only sales. And if they have it, check out their rewards program or email sign up. Sometimes upon sign up you receive a percent off coupon. You may be able to snag some amazing steals that way. Also, with some online stores like Amazon, you can try before you buy with prime wardrobe. That combined with their savings and 2-day shipping, you can't go wrong!
5. Consignment/Secondhand stores! If you have any in your area, check them out! When shopping, keep an open mind- they may not have the size you're looking for, but you could find pieces no one else will have.

6. Shop off-brands! While it's tempting to buy all name-brand everything, the real savings can be found in off-brands, or store brands! Look for similar designs or styles from the off-brands, you'll be surprised!

7. Buy multiples and size up! If you find a great deal on a shirt or pair of pants and it comes in a varieties of colors or styles for the same price- get them! Its easy to mix things up and style things differently to make multiple looks. If you can, size up. This helps to extend the length of wear!

8. Buy off season! Buy spring and summer wardrobe in the fall and winter, and fall and winter wardrobe in the spring and summer, doing this provides you with some of the best deals as the items will be on sale since they're off season!

9. Garage sales! With other moms looking through their kids closets and purging whats too small, you may be able to snag some new, almost new or gently used finds! You may also want to check out your areas buy/sell/trade groups and see whats listed!

10. Shop at discount stores! Stores like Ross, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls are great places to find deals!

11. Wait until after school has started! If you can, hold out until after school is already back in session. Sometimes the best sales on clothes happen after school has already started!

12. When you find a great deal on school supplies, buy extra! Eventually, your child(ren) will need something or the teacher will send home a letter saying they're low on supplies- be prepared and have it on hand. The sale or deal won't last forever!

13. Value packs! If you multiples going back to school who need the same supplies, buy value packs and divide. If you don't have multiples, use the extra to make a homework station at home or save the extras for through out the year as mentioned in 11.

14. Check your areas Sunday paper! Stores advertise their sales there and some include extras savings with coupons.

15. Coupons! Coupons can be a great way to save some money, especially combined with a sale! Check the Sunday paper, online, your email and in stores for coupons.

16. Compare prices and price match! Take a little extra time and compare the prices between stores to make sure you get the best deals! If you find a great deal at a store a little out of your travel area, see if your local store will price match. Some stores will honor the price match with the proof of an ad or online price.



17. Use shopping apps! Apps like Ibotta, Checkout51, and Flipp can be great tools in saving extra money on back to school shopping. Flipp allows you to search, and it brings up ads and coupons related to the item you searched for.

        

18. Shop penny deals! Some stores like Office Depot or Staples will have penny deals on school supplies. Keep your eye on the penny deals and save!

19. Shop at multiple stores! Getting the best deals from multiple stores may save you even more than just shopping at one store.

20. Shop clearance! There is nothing wrong with hitting up the clearance sections while shopping! You never know what you'll find while you're browsing!

Well there you have it! 20 ways to save on back to school clothing and supplies! Whether you're trying to save a little or a lot, there are deals out there if you just look for them! If you have a little extra time, search for the deals- they're worth it! There is no need to pay full retail if you don't have to.
