D.I.Y Jewelry Box Makeover

Hey There!

So this week I'm sharing one of my favorite past times, turning blahhhh stuff into lovelyish!
Lovelyish = lovely shit.
Lovelyish With Danie = Lovely Shit with Danie
The more you know, lol.

I've been really into taking old jewelry boxes and giving them makeovers. In such a weird way, its so stress relieving for me. The whole idea that I can take something and give it new life with a creative twist is just amazing to me. I scope out garage sales and goodwill for them. My favorites are the solid ones without the glass windows, but I like challenges too.

Anyways, this is more of a d.i.y/inspirational post to spark creativity. Before you get rid of your old or unused jewelry box, think to yourself- what can I do to turn this into some lovelyish?! Well, let me inspire you.

Below is my most recent find. I picked it up for a the low price of $3! Everything was still intact with only minor flaws. When I saw this, I knew exactly what it needed.

The only repairs needed are circled in the above picture. The front wood piece with the floral carving was starting to come off, so I wood glued where it was splitting and clamped it.

While it was clamped, I also filled in the floral carving, as it didn't fit the idea I had for it.  Since I had to wait 24 hours for the glue and fill to cure, I took the door and lid off and removed the hardware- which led me to start painting.

I went with chalk paint, so I didn't need to do the prep work aside from wiping down the surface. I did 2 coats of each color with an hour of dry time for each coat to make sure everything was even.

Next was adding my vision, an abstract black, white and gold design around the center of the entire jewelry box. To achieve this look, I used an old gift card, swiping up and down until I liked the look.

Once the 24 hours had passed, I sanded the floral area I had filled in to make it smooth, and sanded down the wood glue to make the edges even. I cleaned the areas and started painting.

While all of that was drying, I started working on the window piece. I spray painted the opposite side of the etching. After the spray paint dried, I got a bowl of water ready to try (for the first time) marble dipping the glass. I wanted the marble texture to add to the abstract. Well, the marbling didn't go exactly as I had pictured, but I kept it and added to it.

This was the end result. I left this to dry for 24 hours as some spots were thicker than others. Once it was dry and my painting was done, I put it all back together.

The finished product! A thrift store jewelry box given a fresh look. I love this piece so much! And, the theme of this box was inspired by some accidental art I had created. I was playing around with some paint and this happened. I fell in love with it and knew it needed to be on a jewelry box, pretty much fate. lol

So far I've done three jewelry boxes. I plan on refinishing some for my nieces, and one for my youngest daughter. Below are the other two I've done.

I hope you've enjoyed this post and are inspired to do some creating yourself! I always find myself thinking of new projects to get into! If you've done anything similar, please share! I'd love to see what you've done and hear from you!

Thank you so much for reading and remember, always enjoy the little things!

Before we get into it though, i want to share a little backstory on the inspiration behind it.  (Tennessee, 2016) My husband loves catfishing . He started fishing with his Papaw at a young age and has been hooked ever since. (Pun intended lol!) If he's not working or at home, he's on the river.  Fishing is his go to hobby, stress reliever and it's something he loves sharing with us as family. Seeing his face light up telling his childhood stories and watching how excited he gets before he goes out has got me hooked. A family that fishes together, stays together!
