Hey There!
Its summer break! All the school age kids are home full time, the sun is shining and its finally hot enough for us to complain about how hot it is! Things couldn"t be better, right? Well, if we can be really honest here for a minute, summer break can be stressful. Especially if you have 2 or more kids. With that in mind, I had to find a way to keep summer enjoyable for them and less stressful for me. Well its been summer break for about a month now and I must say, this has been the easiest summer I've had since becoming a SAHM.
What's the biggest difference between the school year and summer break? Routine. During the school year the days are planned- wake up, morning routine, school, come home, after school routine, dinner, evening routine and then bed- repeat.
Now you're probably thinking "I hate doing the same things over and over, why the f would my child want to do that?!". I promise I'm not a fun sucking monster, ruining summers. Simply put, kids find stability and safety in knowing whats going to happen. Also, when you give them a routine to follow and tasks they can accomplish on their own, it helps build their confidence. I did some research (like always) and kids actually thrive on routine. You can read a couple of the articles I read here and here.
My kids summer routine is pretty easy-
It can't be all work and no fun though- make sure you plan out some family fun at least once a week like a game night or even add a craft or experiment into the day. I've been working on a home summer camp with the kids, so far we've learned about space and the ocean. If you need more ideas, you can check out my pinterest for some fun stuff to do!
To help establish the routine and even give them a little more control, I decided to make a print out of the routine. After some browsing I ended up making my own. I added it to a frame and put it on the wall in their hallway. They can walk past it and check it through out the day. Added bonus: It blends with the decor.
I hope this tip and printable helps you like it has helped me. We only have 18 summers with them so we gotta make them count!
